It’s back again, the great and wonderful Wizard of Oz, presented by our very own Lamp-Lite Theatre.

The Wizard of Oz features Bill Small as the great and powerful OZ and 25 children playing the Munchkins who sing the classic favorites of Follow the Yellow Brick Road and Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead. Other performers will be:

Lamp-Lite Theatre is located on the west side of Nacogdoches, Texas at the junction of US59 and Old Tyler Road (FM1638). You need to know that US59 is incorporated in the west portion of Loop 224 that surrounds Nacogdoches. Lamp-Lite Theatre is nestled in the trees at the very end of Lamp-Lite Lane. Lamp-Lite Lane intersects Old Tyler Road at the north east quadrant of the junction of US59 and Old Tyler Road. Lamp-Lite Lane is a short black top street that runs between the Grace Baptist Church on the left and a Texas State Forrest Service Compound on the right.

Time to Vote!

It’s that time again, when we have the chance to influence our local community and let our desires be known, but in a peaceful and nonviolent way. All across the world are dying, literally, as they struggle to get this opportunity that we sometimes take for granted. Indeed, people sacrificing their lives so that someone else can vote is by no means a far-distant memory even here, either (or at least it shouldn’t be).

Honor those who came before so you can have this opportunity today – get out & vote!

Early voting is already going this week. Voter turnout is expected to be higher than usual, so it’s an especially good time to learn how to attend “early voting” and see how much more pleasant your voting experience can by when you use this fantastic option. Beat the crowd – vote this week!

The Nacogdoches ISD bond issue is a key item on the ballot this time. There are many reasons both FOR and AGAINST the bond issue, and all have some merit and a bit of the truth of the greater picture.

It would be hard to disagree that the Nac schools are as safe as they could be. Open walkways, unfenced areas, classrooms un-attached, all of these issues and more do need to be corrected, and quickly.

Infrastructure is also struggling, and urgent updates are needed in many areas. Even things as basic as paint or chairs all cost money.

Any piece of equipment eventually wears out and a building is no different. Some of our local schools are fast approaching 50+ years old. There’s only so many times you can “update” before a new building really is necessary.

On the other hand, it’s just as important to consider some points on the other side. The current proposal is for 58 million dollars, approximately, which indeed is a huge number. Another bond issue is still current and the school district already has quite a bit of outstanding debt. Is it wise to take on even more debt, and so much? It’s a fair question to ask, especially when tax rates must go up to repay the debt, with interest, of course!

As you are considering how you’d like to vote, there are two especially good places to go for a comprehensive look at more of the issues and information related to the bond proposal.

A new school in Nac? (Jan 30)

A new elementary school in the north end of town is just one of many options to be considered when discussing the need for new or improved facilities in our community. There will be a meeting to inform the public and hear discussion on these items and more on January 30, 2014. This is an open meeting for the community and everyone is invited to attend.

Father Nature is not pleased! (Feb. 14)

The mysterious and magical world of Ya’Ria comes to life in Live Action Role Play (LARP) adventures with Sovereign Scrolls LARP group. You can visit with wizards and healers, warriors and druids, and many other fascinating members of the village that springs to life each month in Woodville, Texas, just about an hour’s drive from Nacogdoches. Participants wearing uniquely costumed garb travel the woods in search of adventure and treasure, using foam covered boffer weapons to slay those who need it.

Community Band (Jan. 26)

Nacogdoches Community Band will begin rehearsal for the Spring 2014 semester on January 26th at 4:00 p.m. Remember how much fun you had as a band nerd in days gone by? You can enjoy the fun of playing with a musical group again by joining the Nac Band.

Musicians ages 16 and older are invited to participate in the band and membership is free. All concert band instruments are needed, especially clarinets and other woodwinds. Don’t worry if you have not played with a band in several years, as you’ll find that it all comes back to you.

The band practices once a week, Sunday afternoons, with additional practice at home, and will have a concert later this spring.

Water Workshop (Feb. 18)

Whether for fishing, canoeing, feeding animals, or drinking it ourselves, the issue of water quality affects us all and everyone can get more informed at the workshop coming soon. The workshop will include info about water quality, water pollution, watershed management, and efforts to help improve and protect water of theAngelina River and surrounding areas. Participants will receive a free copy of the Texas Watershed Steward Handbook and a certificate of completion and CPUs are available for crop advisers, engineers, planners, teachers, landscape architects and floodplain managers.

This workshop is presented by a cooperative effort of the AgriLife Extension, the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Texas Small Farmers and Ranchers Community Based Organization and others.

Fun Run to honor teachers (Feb. 22)

You can run or walk in honor of a special educator in your life at the 3rd annual Chalk Walk/Fun Run hosted by the SFA Chapter of the Professional Association in Education (PDK). This great event will help support local educators and also raises money for scholarships. There is also an option to participate in an officially timed run during this event.
